Dry Cupping

Western Dry Cupping is a Powerful Complement to Sports Massage.

In the world of sports performance and recovery, athletes and active individuals are constantly seeking effective ways to stay at the top of their game. While sports massage remains a cornerstone of muscular health and rehabilitation, one modality that has gained increasing attention in recent years is dry cupping therapy.   You may have seen images of athletes at the Olympics with the unmistakable marks of cupping.  When used alongside massage, dry cupping can enhance results, accelerate recovery, and provide a unique approach to treating soft tissue dysfunction.

How Dry Cupping Works

Suction is created by the cups which in turn draws blood to the targeted area, increasing circulation and oxygen delivery to muscles and connective tissue or fascia. This process helps to:

  • Release tight fascia and adhesions

  • Reduce muscle stiffness and soreness

  • Encourage lymphatic drainage

  • Improve range of motion

  • Support the body’s natural healing processes

The circular marks sometimes left on the skin are not bruises, but rather signs of stagnant blood from tiny capillaries, creating a temporary inflammatory response which can trigger a healing response. These marks typically fade within a few days.

What can I Expect During a Session?

After warming the muscles up with light massage techniques I will determine how best to incorporate cupping into your treatment. Cups may be left stationary or gently moved across the skin (a technique known as “gliding ”). The sensation is often described as a mild pulling or stretching feeling, and most clients find it relaxing.

Cupping is typically used alongside hands-on massage techniques, not as a replacement, ensuring a balanced and effective session.

Is Dry Cupping right for you?

There are contraindications to Dry Cupping which we will of course discuss and you will be fully informed before consenting to treatment.

Final Thoughts

Dry cupping therapy is more than just a trend—it’s a valuable addition to modern sports therapy. By combining the lifting effects of cupping with the targeted pressure of sports massage, clients can experience enhanced recovery, improved mobility and lasting relief from muscular tension.

If you’re looking to take your recovery and performance to the next level, integrating dry cupping into your sports massage routine could be the game-changing approach your body needs.
